Genetically Modified Organisms are plants or animals created by a process of genetic engineering. This process of experimental technology merges DNA from different species and creates a whole new plant or animal that cannot occur naturally.
Let’s break this down a little further… GMO’s can be in almost everything you consume. Cereals, Granola Bars, Juice, Meat, Fruits, and Vegetables. According to True Food Now, “It has been estimated that upwards of 70 percent of processed foods on supermarket shelves–from soda to soup, crackers to condiments–contain genetically engineered ingredients.”
If you do not shop at a farmers market, here are some things you can look for to see if your food has been genetically modified.
- When a product contains the label, 100% organic, it is truly organic. This means that it also does not contain any genetically modified ingredients.
- Products labeled “Non-GMO” or “GMO-free” are indicators that there have been no genetic alterations.
- High-fructose corn syrup is a genetically modified organism, so anything containing it is NOT NATURAL.
